On 27th June 1970, up and coming rock band ‘Smile’ played their first Cornish gig at Truro City Hall, which later became Hall for Cornwall.

Shortly before the show, a young man named Freddie Mercury convinced the band to change their name to Queen!

Truro boy Roger Taylor told Cornwall Live: “ We were paid £50, which was quite a lot of money back then. I’m not sure many people turned up though…Freddie put a lot into that first concert at the City Hall. I remember he jumped about all over the place, prancing about, a bit like Mick Jagger – but Freddie-style.”

Roger’s mum Win had placed two adverts in The West Briton newspaper on the run-up to the gig, still in the name of Smile:
